With the kit-quartz library, you are given integrant component functionality for a quartz scheduler.
Basic Setup
cronut provides us with the :cronut/scheduler
integrant component. We can define it as follows for a job that runs once a day.
:cronut/scheduler
{:schedule #profile {:test []
:default [{:job #ig/ref :myapp/daily-job
:trigger #cronut/cron "0 0 1 1/1 * ?"}]}
:disallowConcurrentExecution? true}
There is a reference to a :myapp.core/daily-job
which will should be defined as a new integrant component. There is also a #cronut/cron
string which is simply a cron string, and we will not worry about for now.
First in our system.edn
we will define the component.
:myapp.core/daily-job
{:identity "myapp.core/daily-job"
:description "Runs once a day and prints hi"
:recover? true
:durable? false}
In myapp.core
we have our job defined as
(defmethod ig/init-key :myapp.core/daily-job
[_ ctx]
(reify org.quartz.Job
(execute [_this _]
(log/info "Start daily job")
(println "Hello!")
(log/info "End daily job"))))
Jobs
Each integrant Quartz job should return an object that implements the org.quartz.Job
interface. This can be done in many ways, such as reify
on org.quartz.Job
or implementing the interface on a class, record, etc. The choice is yours and more details can be foudn in the cronut documentation
Triggers
Cronut offers three different triggers defined via tagged literals:
1) #cronut/cron
- a valid cron expression as a string, e.g. :trigger #cronut/cron "0 0 1 1/1 * ?"
2) #cronut/interval
- the number of milliseconds to execute the job, e.g. :trigger #cronut/interval 3500
3) #cronut/trigger
- full Quartz configuration for a trigger. Below are the examples from the cronut documentation:
;; interval
:trigger #cronut/trigger {:type :simple
:interval 3000
:repeat :forever
:identity ["trigger-two" "test"]
:description "sample simple trigger"
:start #inst "2019-01-01T00:00:00.000-00:00"
:end #inst "2019-02-01T00:00:00.000-00:00"
:misfire :ignore
:priority 5}
;;cron
:trigger #cronut/trigger {:type :cron
:cron "*/6 * * * * ?"
:identity ["trigger-five" "test"]
:description "sample cron trigger"
:start #inst "2018-01-01T00:00:00.000-00:00"
:end #inst "2029-02-01T00:00:00.000-00:00"
:time-zone "Australia/Melbourne"
:misfire :fire-and-proceed
:priority 4}
For full documentation, review the cronut repository.
Quartz JDBC JobStore
Of course, having an in-memory scheduler is only useful in development. When you go to production and need to scale your backend horizontally this is no longer an option. Thankfully, Quartz makes it easy to synchronize with a JobStore implementation of your choosing. For this example, we will take a look at what is required for a JDBC configuration.
First we need a migration. This is taken from the quartz core migration script. You can find plenty of other migration scripts here as well
-- Thanks to Patrick Lightbody for submitting this...
--
-- In your Quartz properties file, you'll need to set
-- org.quartz.jobStore.driverDelegateClass = org.quartz.impl.jdbcjobstore.PostgreSQLDelegate

Next in our prod/resources
folder we will create a file quartz.properties
and insert this code, replacing myapp
and MyApp
with the application name of your choosing
#============================================================================
# Configure Main Scheduler Properties
#============================================================================
org.quartz.scheduler.instanceName = MyAppClusteredScheduler
org.quartz.scheduler.instanceId = AUTO
org.quartz.threadPool.threadCount = 4
#============================================================================
# Configure JobStore
#============================================================================
org.quartz.jobStore.class = org.quartz.impl.jdbcjobstore.JobStoreTX
org.quartz.jobStore.driverDelegateClass = org.quartz.impl.jdbcjobstore.PostgreSQLDelegate
org.quartz.jobStore.useProperties = false
org.quartz.jobStore.dataSource = myapp
org.quartz.jobStore.tablePrefix = QRTZ_
org.quartz.jobStore.isClustered = true
org.quartz.jobStore.clusterCheckinInterval = 20000
#============================================================================
# Configure Datasources
#============================================================================
org.quartz.dataSource.myapp.driver = org.postgresql.Driver
org.quartz.dataSource.myapp.maxConnections = 5
# !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
# Should set these as env properties or in system.edn
# !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
org.quartz.dataSource.myapp.URL =
org.quartz.dataSource.myapp.user =
org.quartz.dataSource.myapp.password =
Now when starting your application in production, ensure you pass in the properties for org.quartz.dataSource.myapp.URL
, org.quartz.dataSource.myapp.user
, and org.quartz.dataSource.myapp.password
. Should you not be able to do this (for various devops restrictions), you can also pass these in your system.edn as follows
:quartz/env-properties
{:org.quartz.dataSource.myapp.URL #env QUARTZ_JDBC_URL
:org.quartz.dataSource.myapp.user #env QUARTZ_JDBC_USER
:org.quartz.dataSource.myapp.password #env QUARTZ_JDBC_PASSWORD}
Alternatively you can set up JobStore implementations in MongoDB and other datastores of your choosing.
